Hello Australia,
Looking for some info/help on areas to live in Sydney.
I am about to accept a job there working in North Sydney ( Miller Street area i think) and am looking in the first instance for:
Good areas to live (renting to start with, possibly buying in 6 months). A list of suburbs will do for now as a starting block.
Idea of costs of renting/buying
Likely commutes (road/train)
Where to avoid?!
Thanks
Hi M&H.
Miller St is right in the middle of North Sydney and right near the train station so you have a lot of options assuming you have the money. That area of Sydney is very expensive.
Costs and commute are wildly variable depending on what you are looking for. (House, townhouse, apartment, near beach etc.)
There isn't anywhere in Sydney that I would specifically tell people to avoid. The places that are close are all a fair way away from North Sydney so I don't think it's an issue for you.
re where to live near north sydney
I strongly suggest living in McMahons Point, it is just a few minutes walk from where you will be working, and some of the apartments have fantastic views of the harbour and the city. Public transport is right on your door step with buses, trains and even ferries just a short walk away.
There are places of all sizes and shapes and you should be able to find some place just to your needs and price
The same place I lived for 3 years. Neutral Bay. Lovely.
Stilly
I hear that Neutral Bay has improved greatly now that you've moved elsewhere!
I think we <read me!> must have frightened MuckyandHelen off - especially if he's not the Mucky I know and love - he would have been back in a flash!
Sorry I have been away for the last week or so....no I don't think I am that Muckay, as I am not Welsh!! Scots through and through! Thanks for all the info, it has given me a good starting point.
Moving from MEL to Nth SYD.
Hello there!
I'm moving from Melbourne to a job in North Ryde in a few months and wanted some pointers on where to live. There seems to be quite a few threads on moving to Sydney, and people have responded with some good advice. I'm not familiar with Sydney at all.
I'm in my early 20s, want to rent (~$225 p.w. and don't mind sharing), and want to be close to restaurants/shops etc. and public transport. So far, I'm thinking of living somewhere in the inner city or perhaps the inner suburbs. I have a car, but don't want to commute for more than 30 mins each way. What suburbs between Nth Ryde and the inner city are worth checking out? Don't want anyplace too quiet, or too loud, but is still close enough to the action.
If I live in the inner city, is there much traffic going outwards to Nth Ryde in the morning? My theory is that since I'll be commuting in the opposite way to most, traffic won't a problem...
Your help is most appreciated. Thanks.
Vira
Hello and welcome to A2K!
Don't think that because you're not working in the city that the traffic won't be too bad!
North Ryde is the hub for a large number of IT and pharmaceutical companies, among others. Public transport to the area is not that good, so many people drive. It can be hideous in the mornings.
In your position, I'd look at renting or sharing somewhere like Balmain, (quite trendy, lots of young people and close to the city), Rozelle, (ditto, but not quite so much) or perhaps Drummoyne / Abbotsford (slightly further out, and quieter, but pleasant!).
These suburbs all have access to Victoria Road - the main road out of the city to the area you're travelling to.
Another option is Concord, but this may be a bit fuddy-duddy!
Have a look at domain.com.au for renting or sharing in these areas. I think, at the price you give, that your rental options would be limited and tiny, but your sharing options should be great! There's lots of lively shared houses around the Balmain area.
Good luck.
Hi Vira,
I useed to be a Sydneysider working in the North Ryde area, but I live in melbourne now. Have done the opposite to you!
If you want somewhere quite vibrant, but not over the top, you could try Chatswood. It has one of the biggest shopping centres in the area (so does North Ryde incidentally), plenty of the restaurants/Cafe culture that you will no doubt yearn for, and is 20 minutes train trip into the city. Even in peak hour, unless I am severely mistaken (I haven't lived in Sydney for 3 1/2 years), it will probably take you about 15-25 minutes to drive to North Ryde depending on traffic. In no traffic, driving on Delhi Road, it will probably take you 5 minutes. Take a look at a street directory to try and get your bearings. When you find a road called Epping Road, keep well away. Its horrendous and easily the busiest road in the district, the main arterial from west to east which services the north shore.
How about living in the North Ryde area?
Thank you both for your prompt replies. I now have a place to start!
One more question: How about actually living in the Ryde area? What's Ryde/Nth Ryde/West Ryde like? Quiet? A little lively? Or classic suburbia? I've heard about Macquarie Shopping Complex, is this something equivalent to Chadstone in Melbourne?
Cheers!
Good area near Miller St. to live with small children?
Hi! I'm about to accept a job on Miller St. I have two kids under 3, so I'm looking for a walkable neighborhood with both playgrounds and cafes. School district isn't important yet. I'd prefer a house to an apartment. I'm okay with (but don't require) a pricey neighborhood.
Any ideas? Thanks!
