The title is the question. Are Fungi plants--and covered in botanical study--or are they an independent category?

Fungi are not plants and comprise a separate Kingdom from the plant Kingdom; however, fungi are included in the study of botany.

Thanks, Coulbert. Unfortunately the bet was based on traditional classification. I like the thought that I'm vindicated by a technicality.
