I read he overcame polio as a child. How do you overcome polio? If you are infected you either 1) recover with no symptoms or 2) live with the effects for life.

You can not influence the outcome.

An old neighbor of mine had polio as a child and was cured of it.
However, he had a recurrence in later life when he was in his 70s.

Maybe it's part of the modern tendency where people don't have diseases, they "fight" them. In my day people died of cancer, now they "lose their battle" with it. To a certain extent I can see that it's good to have a positive attitude and to seek to have the best possible life in spite of a medical condition or disability, but you do see a lot of woo medicine stuff about fighting e.g. cancer by having a "positive attitude".
