Monumental Serenata with Fado de Coimbra:

Here you can see students crying in "Serenata da Queima das Fitas" while listening to "Fado of Coimbra"(typical song from Coimbra sang by students of this Portuguese University). The lyrics of this song remind them of the upcoming end of their graduations and time to leave this city, their colleagues and friends.

Balada da Despedida do V Ano Jurídico

@Fil Albuquerque,
I'm a big fado addict.

Thanks for the great thread idea.

Portuguese was my second language, but I've long lost my fluency. I can still eavesdrop Smile

@ehBeth,
Wow now you got me by surprise Ebeth so you used to talk some Portuguese ? ...how nice of you ! Smile

Will post you one of my modest poems: (it relates to Romantic Coimbra ambience)

ESTÓRIAS

DESCEM-SE DE ESTÓRIAS AS RUAS
E POR DEBAIXO DAS PEDRAS NUAS
OCOS NOSSOS PASSOS AO DESCER
ECOAM-ME LASSOS POEMAS DE VIVER

SONOS QUE Á DISTANCIA DO SOAR
COMO CORDAS SUSPENSAS DE LUAR
SOMBREIAM NO VAZIO DOS ESPAÇOS
O QUE JÁ NÃO SÃO SE FORAM PASSOS !

Very nice, Fil....maybe one day I can visit. I'd love to go to Lisbon.
I am not so interested in the beach towns, I live at the beach in southern California, but more cities and countryside. Since I go just about every year to Europe, we'll plan for Portugal one of these days.

Please continue with your informations, Fil, show us some food too. What's a typical Portuguese meal look like?

@CalamityJane,
Hi Jane ! Smile
There is so much regional diversity on food that it is hard to put a finger on a particular dish...one of the odd things of such small country like Portugal is that its full of microcosms with different habits, cultural particularities, and of course diversified food from region to region. It is hard to place it but figuratively somewhere between French and Italian whatever that might suggest. I will try to catch a food vid on the web In English n post it later.
Thanks for dropping by Jane !

@Fil Albuquerque,
Here is a more recent one with better fine detail on film:

One interesting note about Fado de Coimbra is that you cannot clap when the music finishes, in order to show respect silence is the compliment...you will notice in the end of the first music some noobs will cheer and the public reaction is to shush them...

The Hingeheads went to Portugal a few years ago, and Hinge wrote a thread about it at the time. Maybe we can work up a goodly Portugal tag..

Here's the Hinge thread -

I just watched the videos. Now I want to go even more...
We all should have a field trip to Lisbon. Let's charter a plane for us
and fly over. If we get 200 people together the plane ride will be a lot cheaper.
