Thai policeman mistakenly tackles actor playing purse snatcher: report

BANGKOK (AFP) - A Thai actor playing a purse snatcher was injured while being tackled by a well-intentioned policeman who stumbled into a Bangkok street performance, media reported.

Thep Pho-ngam was grappled and knocked down by a police bodyguard of the Thai justice minister after the officer mistook the cries for help of a woman playing alongside the man for the real thing, said the Bangkok Post.

"I just heard a woman calling for help. I tried to hold him but he resisted. So I had to hurt him," police sergeant-major Chairat Khaengsarikorn was quoted by the daily as saying.

Eyewitnesses told the daily that the actor -- performing in a public awareness play organised by the Department of Rights and Liberties Protections -- had been shaken by the mistake but had agreed not to press charges.

The head of the company contracted to organise the show, Nutcharee Pliensangsri, was quoted as saying the actor was only slightly injured in the performance, which had been set up to look like the real thing.

"I didn't expect it to be so real," she said.

Col, speaking of tackling, you had better get over to Gus' thread and defend yourself. Razz

drom, I do believe that Col isn't throwing down the gauntlet because he's a flower child. Bee stings and flowers at twenty paces seem rather unfairly matched, no?

Indeed! Yet, BBB is preparing to dig his grave, and/or make Col suck his thumb, so it's not dying down.

Maybe music would calm them down?

Absolutely, drom, but Gus has stirred up a hornet's nest on another thread. He is most definitely a signifier. More later to explain that term.

I did tell you. You know, first declaring war to Austria and nuking Macedonia, followed by fleeing to Cuba with my Liechtenstein billions. I skipped the declaring war and nuking stuff and went straight to Cuba Mr. Green

Good grief, Rick is off to college and Col is back in Leeds.

drom, the term signifier comes from African folk tales. The monkey was always the trouble maker. He would tell the lion one lie, then go to the elephant and tell him another. While the two duked it out, the monkey would sit back and watch. That term is often used by black Americans to this day. (as well as many other signifiers)

Gee, I just looked up signifier, and this is the first thing I found (I didn't finish reading it, but the start is interesting...)

Those two examples didn't seem to have the element of diff strokes for diff folks - different context, I guess.

Well my goodness, Osso. Take a peek here:

And glad to see the hippy is back and writing poetry.

Wow! Col. Sounds like Martin Luther:

DC, March 1969

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
Lyrics & Music: Martin Luther 1529

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Love playing that hymn on the piano. Can you believe that at one time I thought all Germans were Lutheran? Rolling Eyes

Letty, I'm going to overwhelm Col Man with sweet honey instead of bee stings. How is that for a unique approach here on A2K?

I wasn't saying you were wrong, Letty. I was mentioning a whole world of semiotics, which seems to me to use 'signifier' differently. It is a world that I am not particularly interested in myself.

Aw... I can feel the love and the cherry soda in this thread.

That's an interesting fable, Letty; signifying can be amusing, I guess, but some people (not Gus, who does it for funniness rather than spite two people) take it too far. Who do you think of as signifiers?

Rick, you will wage war on Macedonia, or I am removing you from the office of Penguin Demi-God, and it is for that office that Castro is bothering you. He thinks that you look all bright and cartoon-like in a penguin suit, and could thus confuse W. Bush.
