Rainsoft Water Softner System Regenerating To Often

NEED HELP!! We bought this system sometime back in 1997. This system has been great. The computer has not been functioning properly and the water consumpton counter is not working. Was told by a tech that it was to expensive to replace. He also said that the system would fall back onto a default regeneration cycle system, which I noticed was approximately once a month. Now the system is regenerating once a week. Our water consumption has not increased. Could you advise as to what we may be able to do to fix this issue?
