Hi everybody - I'm doing a work abroad program in January for 3 months or so, and would like to try to figure out where I should live while there... I've been reading your posts and wonder if maybe Margo or someone has any suggestions... I'm 26 and single, and I guess it depends on where I work but is there a way to live near the beach without spending an arm and a leg?

Also, the prices listed for accommodation, say A$85, that's per night right? What's the difference between "accommodation" and "apartment"? I just want a room w/ private bathroom and a place to cook my own food. I'd really appreciate any advice.. I'll check back tomorrow I gotta go now... thanks!

Aaaarrrrggghhhh!

What is it about people coming to Sydney!

Consider share accommodation - have a look at domain.com.au
Scroll down to share accom....

Select NSW as the state (New South Wales, the state of which Sydney is the capital city!)

The click on Eastern Suburbs and/or northern beaches.

Then select some suburbs.

I hit on Bondi, Bondi Junction, Bronte...
and found a bunch of listings for rooms in shared houses, apartments. It looks like the going price is $130+/week. It will cost you a bit more to find a room with private bathroom, but not impossible. Lots of backpackers live around here, and some places are pretty squalid. If you like your critter comforts, look carefully at what is being offered.

Here's an example:
BONDI , lge. b.r. in 4 b.r. mod. spac. unit, shr. with 3. Own ens/balc. 5 mins beach. $180 p.w.

(translation: large bedroom in 4 bedroom spacious unit, share with 3 others. Own ensuite bathroom and balcony; 5 minutes to the beach. )

Some of these may well require you to take a 6-month lease, but some accept shorter periods.

If you see accommodation for $85 - that's likely to be a night, in a hotel / guest house, not necessarily with its own bathroom.

Consider first where you are going to work. Sydney is a very spread out city, and if you are working in the far suburbs, the 1-2 hour commute morning and evening will take some shine off living in the beach suburbs.

Use whereis.com.au to get an idea of your bearings.

If all else fails, come back with some info on where you need to be, as well as where you'd like to be.

I know out of towners can be annoying... trust me I live in New York City! I appreciate your help very much... I'll look into those. This is going to be harder than I thought... I didn't realize I'd be sharing a bathroom or even a kitchen. But I'll take all your advice. Hell it's an adventure, right? Thanks v. much. And if you're ever coming to New York and need a tip, lemme know.

You don't need to be sharing a bathroom - you gets what you pays for - You may be able to find a studio apartment that's not too hideously expensive.

It'd help if you give some info on what you plan to do while you're here - and where else you're going. I'm really flying blind. I'll be away for the next few days....

thanks
Yea sorry 'bout that, I don't quite know details yet. I hope to do a BUNAC work abroad program, I apply this month to leave in January and stay through March hopefully into April. I am going to try to get a job through News Corp since I work for a News Corp company here, but to be honest I don't want to go to Oz just to sit in an office all day like I do here. So I am not sure yet. I do want to live in Sydney because I feel its personality fits me, and there are tons of places in the country I want to see: Uluru, Darwin and Kakadu Nat'l Park, Broome & The Kimberley, Perth, mining towns, everything between Adelaide and Canberra, and of course the ultimate cliche' -- going up the East Coast of Queensland. What do you think?

til then Have a nice holiday Smile

Australia - where else but the West!!!
Hi, I live on the East coast of Australia and have recently had a holiday in North West Australia. I would highly recommend living over there, as the lifestyle is really laid back and the people friendly. If you are travelling and looking for new experiences, try the Kimberley coastline. I went with this company www.kimberleycruises.com on a sailing trip which was unforgettable. Take care,
