The Sounds of Summer

@Letty,
I found a version that was written down by my uncle in 1940

ONCE I WENT IN SWIMMING

Once I went in swimming,
Where there were no wimmin'
Down beside the sea;
Seeing no one there,
I hung up my underwear
Upon a willow tree.

Then I dove into the water,
Just like Pharo's daughter,
In the Nile:
Someone saw me there,
And stole my underwear,
And left me with a smile!

was going to start a new summer music thread

decided to see what was in the archives

found this lovely thing

__

since the thread seems to be from the days before we knew how to post youtube links I think I'll start by posting links for the songs that started this.

maybe start a youtube playlist for the thread?

This little known Abba song made it to number one over here. It's about a city in Sweden where the days go on and on in the Summer.

Sorry, time for an Australia perspective :-)

Midnight Oil constantly referenced the beach and summer as an repressive/oppressive dark shadow on Oz society - and this stuff brings back that feeling burning Sydney summers.

But the Oils were actually beach/surf fans and this instrumental was a loving instrumental paen to the island of Coogee Beach. Always bittersweet - I knew a woman who used to cry when she heard it (her Oils/surf loving son died young).

The only oz other band I really associate with summer is Australian Crawl.
