Found this bit of news and thought that I would share it with you all, including those who are not in the summer solstice zone:

http://home.bellsouth.net/s/editorial.dll?bfromind=1474&eeid=4247458&_sitecat=75&eetype=article&render=y&ck=

And the question is, Which of those songs best fits your ideas of summer?

Songs by the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett always work for me, Letty!

How about you?

I can't believe they didn't mention this one:

SUMMER WINE
Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood

(NANCY):
Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things

(LEE):
I walked in town on silver spurs that jingled to
A song that I had only sang to just a few
She saw my silver spurs and said lets pass some time
And I will give to you summer wine
Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

(NANCY):
Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine
Ohhh-oh summer wine

(LEE):
My eyes grew heavy and my lips they could not speak
I tried to get up but I couldn't find my feet
She reassured me with an unfamiliar line
And then she gave to me more summer wine
Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

(NANCY):
Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine
Mmm-mm summer wine

(LEE):
When I woke up the sun was shining in my eyes
My silver spurs were gone my head felt twice its size
She took my silver spurs a dollar and a dime
And left me cravin' for more summer wine
Ohh-oh-oh summer wine

(NANCY):
Strawberries cherries and an angel's kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine
Mmm-mm summer wine

Well, Urs, my goodness. You know me and my jazz. Don't think this one was among the choices, but I do love it:

I like New York in June, how about you.
I like a Gershwin tune, how about you
I like a fireside when a storm is due.

I like potato chips, moonlight and motor trips,
How about you dear.

I'm mad about good books can't get my fill,
And your and hubby's looks give me a thrill. (changed that a wee bit)

Holding hands in a picture show,
When all the lights are low,
May not be new,
But I like it how about you.

Very Happy

Yes, indeed, Urs. I'm with you on Buffet (not Warren) and, of course, The Beach Boys.

Ah, Cav. There are many that they didn't mention. That one you posted was haunting. Didn't they do something called Phaedra?

But I remember oldandknew loved The Beach Boys, especially:
"And she'll have phun phun phun til her daddy takes her T-Bird away.
Miss that cockney Brit."

SOME VELVET MORNING
Nancy and Lee

Lee:
Some velvet morning when I'm straight.
I'm gonna open up your gate.
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
and how she gave me life
and how she made it in.
Some velvet morning when I'm straight.

Nancy:
Flowers growing on the hill.
Dragonflies and daffodils.
Learn from us very much.
Look at us but do not touch.
Phaedra is my name.

Lee:
Some velvet morning when I'm straight.
I'm gonna open up your gate.
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
and how she gave me life
and how she made it in.
Some velvet morning when I'm straight.

Nancy:
Flowers are the things we knew.
Secrets are the things we grew.
Learn from us very much.
Look at us but do not touch.
Phaedra is my name.

Lee:
Some velvet morning when I'm straight.

Nancy:
Flowers growing on the hill.

Lee:
I'm gonna open up your gate.

Nancy:
Dragonflies and daffodils.

Lee:
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra

Nancy:
Learn from us very much.

Lee:
And how she gave me life.

Nancy:
Look at us but do not touch.

Lee:
and how she made it in.

That's the one. I first heard this as bumper music on Art Bell's "Coast to Coast." Laughing It always haunted me, especially the creepy shifts between 4:4 and 3:4 time.

Here's a goody they didn't include, either. Of course no one under the age of 40 will know it. Razz

Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer Lyrics
Artist: Nat Cole

Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer Lyrics

-Artist: Nat King Cole
-peak Billboard position # 6 in 1963
-Words by Charles Tobias and Music by Hans Carste

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Just fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies
Then lock the house up, now you're set
And on the beach you'll see the girls in their bikinis
As cute as ever but they never get 'em wet

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Don't hafta tell a girl and fella about a drive-in
Or some romantic moon it seems
Right from the moment that those lovers start arrivin'
You'll see more kissin' <wolf whistle> in the cars than on the screen

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here

You'll wish that summer could always be here
You'll wish that summer could always be here

For me, summer conjures up memories of Harry Belafonte's "Jamaica Farewell", "Matilda", and - of course - "Banana Boat Song".

DAY-OH!

hmmm. Summer songs? - Of course, Summertime, (and the livin' is easy) and Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay and

The summer wind came blowin' in
From across the sea
It lingered there so warm and fair

All summer long
we sang a song
And then we strolled on golden sand
Two friends
and the summer wind

Like painted skies, those days and nights
They went flying by
The world was new
Beneath the bright blue
Umbrella sky

Then softer than
That piper man
One day, it called to you
And I lost you
I lost you to
The summer wind

The autumn wind
And the winter winds
They have come and they have gone
And still those days
Those lonely days
They go on and on
And guess who sighs his lullabies
To all the nights that never end?
My fickle friend,
The summer wind

Umm... the summer wind.

Ah, George and Raggedy. I thought this thread was dead in the water..<smile> Remember both of those, of course. UhOh!

There was another summertime song and it was simply terrible. It flea bit. Heh! Heh! (past tense for fly beat in Jazz talk)

In the summertime when all the leaves and trees were green...

Thing did NOT have one bit of meter.

Not worth tracking down on the web, is it, George. Just for the horror of it, I'll look anyway.

Oh, my Gawd, George. It's far worse than I ever remembered:

sung on Andy Williams-I Like Your Kind Of Love
-The Best Of the Cadence Years": Varese Sarabande VSD 5644
-peak Billboard Pop chart position # 64 in 1960-61 as " You Don't Want My Love"
-Writer Miller's version hit #14 on the Country chart in 1960

In the summertime when all the trees and leaves are green
And the redbird sings, I'll be blue
'cause you don't want my love

"Some other time", that's whatcha say when I want you
Then you laugh at me and make me cry
'cause you don't want my love

You don't seem to care a thing about me
You'd rather live without me
Than to have my arms around you
When the nights are cold and you're so all alone (all alone)

In the summertime when all the trees and leaves are green
And the redbird sings, I'll be blue
'cause you don't want my love

Once upon a time you used to smile and wave to me
And walk with me but now you don't
'cause you don't want my love

Some other guy is takin' up all your time
Now ya don't have any time for me
'cause you don't want my love

You don't seem to care a thing about me
You'd rather live without me
Than to have my arms around you
When the nights are cold and you're so all alone (all alone)

In the summertime when all the trees and leaves are green
And the redbird sings, I'll be blue
'cause you don't want my love

In the summertime when all the trees and leaves are green
And the redbird sings, I'll be blue
'cause you don't want my love

(In summertime, in summertime when all the leaves are green)
In the summertime, I'll be blue all the time
'cause you don't want my love

Hello Muddah, hello Fadduh,
Here I am at Camp Granada.
Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.

I went hiking with Joe Spivey;
He developed poison ivy.
You remember Leonard Skinner?
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.

All the counselors hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators.
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called "Ulysses."

Now I don't want this should scare ya,
But my bunkmate has malaria.
You remember Jeffrey Hardy?
They're about to organize a searching party.

Take me home, oh Muddah, Fadduh,
Take me home, I hate Granada.
Don't leave me out in the forest
Where I might get eaten by a bear.

Take me home, I promise I will not make noise
Or mess the house with oth - er boys;
Oh please don't make me stay,
I've been here one whole day.

Dearest Fadduh, darling Muddah,
How's my precious little bruddah?
Let me come home if you miss me -
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.

Wait a minute--it stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing,
Playing baseball--gee, dat's bettah!
Muddah, Fadduh, kindly disregard this lettah!

Oh, my Gawd, George. I love that funny song. I do believe that was sung to The Dance of the Hours.

Doing this one from memory and I think it's a parody:

Once I went in swimming
Where there were no women or no men to see.
Bathing suits were loathing,
So I took my clothing off behind a tree.

Stepped into the water,
Just like Pharoah's daughter stepped into the nile.
Someone saw me there and stole my underwear,
And left me with a smile.

Where in the world did that come from? Skinny dippin' I guess Razz

Skinny dippin', Letty Very Happy I always wanted to, but never had the nerve.

We used to sing:

Miss Fitzimmon
Went in swimmin'
Early one summer morn
Took a dip, heard a rip
And knew her suit was torn.

Waited until the change of tide
Took all the water out
And when she could no longer hide
She began to shout:

Show me the way to go home.......

See You In September Lyrics By Fabares, Shelley
I'll be alone each and every night
While you're away, don't forget to write
Bye-bye, so long, farewell
Bye-bye, so long
See you in September
See you when the summer's through
Here we are (bye, baby, goodbye)
Saying goodbye at the station (bye, baby, goodbye)
Summer vacation (bye, baby bye, baby)
Is taking you away (bye, baby, goodbye)
Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love
(counting the days 'til I'll be with you)
(counting the hours and the minutes, too)
Bye, baby, goodbye
Bye, baby, goodbye
Bye, baby, goodbye (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
Bye, baby, goodbye (bye-bye, so long)
Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love
(I'll be alone each and every night)
(While you're away, don't forget to write)
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
I'm hopin' I'll
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
Well, maybe I'll
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
