She was afraid to come out of the locker,
She was as nervous as she could be.
She was afraid to come out of the locker.
She was afraid that somebody would see.

Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.

It was an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
So in the locker she wanted to stay.

Two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more.

She was afraid to come out of the blanket,
She was as nervous as she could be.
She was afraid to come out of the blanket.
She was afraid that somebody would see.

Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.

It was an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
So in the blanket she wanted to stay.

Two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more.

She was afraid to come out of the water,
She was as nervous as she could be.
She was afraid to come out of the water.
She was afraid that somebody would see.

Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.

It was an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
So in the water she wanted to stay.

From the locker to the blanket,
From the blanket to the shore,
From the shore to the water,
Guess there isn't any more.

She was afraid to come out in the open,
And so a blanket around her she wore,
She was afraid to come out to the open,
And so she sat bundled up on the shore.

Now she's afraid to come of the water,
And I wonder what she's gonna to do,
Now she's afraid to come out of the water,
And the poor little girl's turning blue.

Afraid to come out of the Locker? Thought that was water, George. Razz

edgar, Don't know that one...

Remember the Bell Sisters. My friend from high school and I use to sing it:

Down in Bermuda,
Paradise for two.
I lost my lover there in the blue.

We went sailing on the coral sea
Starlit waters,
My Baby and me.
Time was endless
Love sang its song,
We dreamed of tomorrow,
Now he is gone.

I see his face in the water,
I see his eyes in the ocean blue,
I see his hair floating in the morning sunlight,
Calling me clear, drawing me near.

In Bermudan waters so clear and so cold
I dream of my lover,
As I grow old.

Or something like that...Google sucks, as usual.

This one is not spcifically a summer song, but it's ideal.

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance,
romance, romance, romance

Water all around it everywhere
Tropical trees and the salty air
But for me the thing that's a-waitin'there; romance

It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away
Restin' in the water serene
I'd work for anyone, even the Navy
Who would float me to my island dream

Twenty- six miles, so near yet far
I'd swim with just some water-wings and my guitar
I could leave the wings but I'll need the guitar
for romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance

A tropical heaven out in the ocean
Covered with trees and girls
If I have to swim, I'll do it forever
Till I'm gazin' on those island pearls

Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat
Any old thing that'll stay afloat
When we arrive we'll all promote romance,
romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance,
romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me

and speaking of skinny dippin'. I think this is applicable not only to the sounds, but the sights of summer:

Glow little glow-worm, fly of fire
Glow like an incandescent wire
Glow for the female of the species, turn on the AC and the DC.
This night could use a little brightnin'
Light up you little ol' bug of lightnin'
When you gotta glow, you gotta glow-- glow little glow-worm, glow.

Glow little glow-worm, glow and glimmer
Swim through the sea of night, little swimmer
Thou aeronautical boll weevil, illuminate yon woods primeval.
See how the shadows deep and darken
You and your chick should get to sparkin'
I got a gal that I love so -- glow little glow-worm, glow

Glow little glow-worm, turn the key on
You are equipped with taillight neon
You got a cute vest-pocket *Mazda*
Which you can make both slow and *fazda*
I don't know who you took a shine to
Or who you're out to make a sign to
I got a gal that I love so glow little glow-worm, glow,

When my girl friend and I decided to go skinny dippin in a very cold creek, the only light was the glow worms that lit up the bank with eerie incandescence. They are the larvae of what we always called lightnen bugs. What a beautiful sight they were at night in the summer when we were kids. I haven't seen one in years.

I don't remember The Bell Sisters. They must be fairly new - like in the 80s. (lol)

I was always curious about glowworms. I've seen the lightnin' bugs in the city, but never the worms. But, as I said, I never went skinny dippin' either. Laughing

Here's a summer goodie:

I'll tell you why I can't find you
Every time I go out to your place...

You gone fishin' (well how you know)
Well there's a sign upon your door (uh-huh)
Gone fishin' (I'm real gone man)
You ain't workin' anymore (could be)
There's your hoe out in the sun
Where you left a row half done
You claim that hoein' ain't no fun (well I can prove it)
You ain't got no ambition

Gone fishin' by a shady wady pool (Shangrila, really la)
I'm wishin' I could be that kind of fool (should I twist your arm?)
I'd say no more work for mine (welcome to the club)
On my door I'd hang a sign
Gone fishin' instead of just a-wishin'

Papa Bing (yeah Louis)
I stopped by your place a time or two lately
And you aren't home either
Well, I'm a busy man Louis. I got a lotta deals cookin'
I was probably tied up at the studio
You weren't tied up you dog
You was just plain old...

Gone fishin' (bah-boo-bah-boo-bah-boo-bah-boo-bah)
There's a sign upon your door (Pops, don't blab it around, will you?)
Gone fishin' (keep it shady, I got me a big one staked out)
Mmm, you ain't workin' anymore (I don't have to work, I got me a piece of Gary)
Cows need milkin' in the barn (I have the twins on that detail, they each take a side)
But you just don't give a darn (give 'em four bits a cow and hand lotion)
You just never seem to learn (man, you taught me)
You ain't got no ambition (you're convincin' me)

Gone fishin' (bah-boo-dah-do-dah-do-dah-do)
Got your hound dog by your side (that's old Cindy-Lou goin' with me)
Gone fishin' (mmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm)
Fleas are bitin' at his hide (get away from me boy, you bother me)

Mmm, folks won't find us now because
Mister Satch and Mister Cros
We gone fishin' instead of just a-wishin'
Bah-boo-baby-bah-boo-bah-bay-mmm-bo-bay
Oh yeah!

Love it, Raggedy. That's probably our fishin's theme song. Cool

Me neither. Office of Money and Banking? Very Happy

And in keeping with the topic:

On the BANKS of the Wabash, Far Away
Written by Paul Dresser
Composed by Paul Dresser

'Round my Indiana homesteads wave the cornfields,
In the distance loom the woodlands clear and cool.
Oftentimes my thoughts revert to scenes of childhood,
Where I first received my lessons, nature's school.
But one thing there is missing in the picture,
Without her face it seems so incomplete.
I long to see my mother in the doorway,
As she stood there years ago, her boy to greet.

[CHORUS]
Oh, the moonlight's fair tonight along the Wabash,
From the fields there comes the breath of new mown hay.
Through the sycamores the candle lights are gleaming,
On the banks of the Wabash, far away.

Many years have passed since I strolled by the river,
Arm in arm, with sweetheart Mary by my side,
It was there I tried to tell her that I loved her,
It was there I begged of her to be my bride.
Long years have passed since I strolled thro' there churchyard.
She's sleeping there, my angel, Mary dear,
I loved her, but she thought I didn't mean it,
Still I'd give my future were she only here.

Was that stretching it a bit? Very Happy

Sounds good to me. My first thought was Office of Money and Bribery.

Oh, I love the Banks of the Wabash. That was a favorite of barber shop quartets. Whatever happened to them? (Maybe they got stuck when the tide rolled out, beatin their feet in the Mississippi mud.)

Office of money and bribery? Love it!

I sang that song, Mississippi Mud, Raggedy. Local presentation of our little theatre group. Some big band did it, too. It was a one hit wonder.

Mississippi Mud with Paul Whiteman and the Rhythm Boys of which Bing Crosby was a member. I still have that recording. Had a friend try to teach me that on a Uke. No luck. The only thing I could play was a harmonica, and that didn't go over too well in my household.

Summertime Love, as sung by Harry Belafonte

Many times I've been told
By the wise and the old
Something good I'm supposed to remember
If my first love I've found
In the warmth of July
It'll cool in the nip of September
Now they point to the skies
Do the old and the wise
And they speak of a chill in the air
But I don't care

(on both albums:)
For still I love my summertime love
Still I love the kissing and the courting
Still I love my summertime love
With a heart still summertime true
Still I love my summertime love
Let the seasons change as they do

Oh still I love my summertime love
Still I love the kissing and the courting
Still I love my summertime love
With a heart still summertime true

Letty's Skinnydipping "parody" in Sounds of Summer
I'm a "newbie" to forums of any kind, however I stumbled across this one while doing a search on the lyrics of a song my sister and I remember our mother singing, way too many years ago (like in the late 1950's or early 1960's). Our younger brothers thought we were making it up!

The version is slightly different than that posted by Letty. Anybody know where it came from?

Here's the version we remember:

Once I went in swimming
Where there were no women
And no one to see.

Hung my little britches
On some little switches
Of a nearby tree.

Then, like Pharaoh's daugher
Swam in the inky water
Of the River Nile
Along came a little bear and
Stole all my underwear and
Left me with a smile.

Any clues out there?

Great stuff. NewYork's A Lonely Town(When You're The Only Surfer Boy Around) reminds me of summer. And Daydream by the Spoonful.
The first big summer song I remember is Speedy Gonzales playing at the pool every day.

djp, Welcome to A2K. Sorry that I don't remember those particular lyrics, but I think that the one I posted was a parody of another song. Over time, folks make up their own words to stuff, right?

Panz, Speedy Gonzales playing at the pool? Smile
