Thoughts on Causality

I was looking through the filosophy threads and didn't see any on causality. I couldn't help myself.

So we've all seen the Matrix. And we're all familiar with the Merovingian. In reloaded (i think) everyone goes to his place to ask for the keymaker. He says something like: you won't get him because i have no reason to give him to you. And then he goes on a shpeal about causality.

Apparently there is a reason for everything. Stuff happens because of cause and effect for a reason. What is the reason for the existence of humand? Of you?

No amount of philosophizing could possibly compensate for the one-dimensional acting of Keanu Reeves, a.k.a. "The Little Wooden Boy."

At various times, the following reasons seem to fit:

1. To learn, especially to learn to love one another.
2. To be the consciousness of the universe.
3. To carry water uphill.
4. To ponder what is the reason for existence.

I thought the true meaning of the term causality is that there is a CAUSE for everything. This doesn't necessarily mean that there is a REASON for everything, I'd say. There may be a cause for the existence of the sun, but is it the same as that there is a reason for it's existence?

The cause merely looks at the origin of a thing to be analyzed. A reason goes deeper then that: It'll also try to give an explanation for said existence.

Naj, by a reason for something, as opposed to the cause of its existence, do you refer to its purpose, why it was created?

By cause do you mean the unintended physical determinant of its existence and nothing more?

Causality explains a lot, but there's also a lot of room for random chance.

Ah yes,

You are correct. That is indeed the way I define those two concepts. Perhaps this sounds somewhat oversensitive or something, but I know there are people who habitually confuse these terms.
Just because you know how something was caused, you don't have the reason for it being there.
