i should add that it was found near a river, there is virtualy no know volcanic history in the area,and the rock appears to be in its natural context. i thought that it may be hornfels but im not sure

I would call that a "hard rock" but it also looks like it has "fool's gold" in it .

heres a close up. im sure its not flint as it does not have any conchoidal fractures.
