Mostly, they live on insects. Cut off their food supply and they will leave or starve.

Unless you live somewhere where spiders are poisonous, leave them be, they kill flies.

They're already there, normally in the spaces you never go, under the floorboards, in the gaps between walls etc. Around September October they get randy and start looking for sex, which is when you're likely to see them.
