Jovially, often explains why we English spell yoghurt: the original Turkish spelling is yogurt, with a circumflex over the g. We transcribe Turkish words with this circumflex as 'gh,' because Turkish words with g on their own usually sound like the j in measure.
Kindly inquires: "So, do you pronounce it 'yogurt' or 'yojurt'?"
Lo, we pronounce it with the hard G in garden: that's why it is gh.
Messes up word games all too often. That specific one more than any others. Man, that one always tricks me.
