Posting Public but not Sharing

I get a lot of posts from friends that I find trivial. I want to put items about myself on my timeline which I am happy for anyone to see but do not want to have an automatic posting to friends - I don't see why I should bother them with the trivia of my life (even if they do to me!). How do I make a post Public but not send out a share automatically to friends?

If believe you can do this with lists. I think all you need to do is create a list with only yourself on it, and post to that list.
