Hybrids in, SUVs out?

Sales of hybrid vehicles rise as popularity of sports utility vehicles dips amid soaring gas prices.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Hybrid vehicles made headlines last March after movie stars like Robin Williams, Will Ferrell and Tim Robbins used the Toyota Prius to get to the Academy Awards show.
Their environmentally conscious fashion statement seems to have foreshadowed a trend. This spring, more and more Americans are looking to buy one of a growing array of fuel-saving vehicles designed to run on gasoline and electricity.
"With gasoline prices reaching beyond $2 per gallon and the general concern over the U.S.'s dependence on foreign oil, hybrid vehicles are catching more consumers' attention," Prudential Equity Group analyst Michael Bruynesteyn said in a recent research note.

It would appear that there is a silver lining in the high cost of gasoline. That the increased interest in hybrid automobiles.Which in the long run reduce the need for foreign oil and be environmentally less destructive. The only problem is that as usual Detroit is lagging behind and will more than likely be hurt since most of their profits come from large gas guzzling monsters.

at some point we have to accept the short term hurt for the long term benefit.

I have always driven a vehicle with the smallest most efficient engine possible with the exception of my work vehicle which is a diesel. We have a v4 in one van and a v6 in the other. If they come out with a hybrid big enough for five, we will make it our next vehicle.

I drive a Ford Ranger, partly because it's a good truck, but the main reason I keep it, since it's old, is the good gas mileage. It's an '88, but it doesn't burn oil yet.

I had a ninety Ranger. I loved that little truck. It had a V4, but it was peppy and I even could pull a small trailer with it.

A lady driving a Nissan van plowed into me at 50 on the drivers side, turned me and the truck on it's side and pushed us into a field. I survived, but my Ranger did not.

Same fate with my daughter. She and her Ranger were at the light waiting for a turn signal. A speeding car coming the opposte way rear ended a car, sending it crashing into her. She survived unhurt, but the Ranger was totalled.
