That post has been voted up and down so many times it must feel as a yo-yo does when being energetically used.

To summarise: ending a sentence with a preposition is still controversial, and many people avoid it.
Starting a sentence with one is absolutely fine, and always has been.
Yes. Well said, Contrex.
If memory serves, that advice has been attributed to an English nobleman
(whose name escapes me) who suggested that ending a sentence with a preposition
debilitates and enfeebles one 's writing. It does not offend logic.

My loyalty to English grammar is based upon its fidelity to logic.
To the extent that it deviates therefrom (e.g., the prohibition v. splitting infinitive verbs
because of the Latin language), I withdraw my adherence.

Acceptability to a native speaker is one definition of "grammar"
U know, Fresco, I 'm not in any big hurry to copy
my fellow citizen in oral or written expression. IF sound logic
supports my grammar (e.g., consistency of number) then I 'll use convenient syntax,
regardless of how popular it is. I'm no follower of fashion.

However, I acknowledge the merit of offering your advice
to an alien esl student who is beginning to learn English.
