I recently set up a facebook account but when I tried to add an old friend I found his profile but there was no add friend bar.

His privacy settings are doing that.

hi thanks for the reply what seems strange is that when I go on my sons facefbook I can add him no problem but no on mine any ideas

The person in question probably blocked your account for whatever reason.
@tsarstepan,
he would not of had time too as I requested him as soon as I opened my new account - also when I went to message him it said it would be sent to other folder.
