Timeline clogged with Likes & Comments

Does anybody know how to stop the Timeline filling up with items that other people have liked or commented on, but not shared? It started this week and it's driving me mad.

In fact, it's become so ridiculous that I don't have time to wade through it all to find the stuff friends have actually posted. This may be the end for me and Facebook unless it's sorted.
