Which is better?

It started raining, ruining our plans.
It started raining, which ruined our plans.

I have heard they are equally correct and mean the same thing but I always have a hard time using the first one. Thanks very much.

Thanks, but that was not the point. Let me try another example:

Dad came home early, ruining my plans.
Dad came home early, which ruined my plans.

Which one do natives prefer?

I'd go with succinctness.
