I've read that red kangaroos, which live in the harshest arid environments, will toss aside their young to die in an especially dry year, thus a lot of orphans. It sounds cruel, but in those especially arid years it's either both mother and child die or just the mother survives to breed again another year. I imagine that in dry years there are a lot of orphans to rescue.
