I just received a pamphlet with Home Safety Tips. It says to "flush outdated medication down the toilet." I thought that can result in contaminating our water supply with very small quantities of medication.

Yes it does slightly pollute the water shed. The best way to dispose of them is to take them to a pharmacy or give them to your physician for disposal.
