Are you asking what is the difference between the two terms in a given country? Or what is difference between a lawyer in an American based legal system and a solicitor in an English based legal system?

The "English based system" would include the Welsh and Northern Irish system, the Scottish system is a bit different.

In all those systems, a lawyer is the general term for a barrister as well as a solicitor. (Attorney is American English word for a British English lawyer)
