Wells Fargo is never a bargain, no matter how it looks at first glance.
Some banks allow you to have a low balance account if you have a home loan or other asset with them.
In Washington state, Banner Bank is extremely accommodating.

My bank offers a 50 + account. It's free except for the cost of checks, and no minimum balance.

Bank of America doesn't have a minimum daily balance as long as you have direct deposit.
