Who do smells trigger such strong memories

I guess it's obvious that smells are associated with things, and by association, trigger memories. But I guess what I'm wondering is why this effect is so strong sometimes.

Is there something about our sense of smell which is particularly associated with memory itself?

There are more theories than answers, but it seems the sense of smell is hardwired to the subconscious of the brain. See Vomeronasal for a somewhat useful discussion of the phenomenon, and goolgle the word "vomeronasal" for more info than anyone likely needs.
