Reply Tue 24 Dec, 2002 01:43 pm
OK wordsmyths, here's the ninth instalment:

I'm looking for a 9-letter English word (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) which matches the following

Clues:
The letters 2, 8 & 3 (in that order) spell a type of SWITCH.
The letters 1, 6, 5 & 9 (in that order) spell a type of FISH.
The letters 4, 5, 6 & 7 (in that order) spell a type of FLAG.

Notes:
8 of the nine letters are different.
2 of the nine letters are vowels.
The correct word (and ALL sub-clue words) are found in Webster's Dictionary - 10th Edition.
Vowels here, are defined as: A, E, I, O and U.

Happy sleuthing Smile

Thanks for the puzzle, Bib.

My job gets really busy now, with all the year-end accounting. But, I'll be keeping my scratch paper with the nine little blank lines next to my keyboard! And, I'll be sub-consciously searching for 4-letter words for Fish!!

Very Happy

That's right, mac. I think we'll need to work on this one through the fish (sounds icky). Hmm.

A switch is also an alternative word for whip. Don't know if that helps at all.

Note that the fish and the flag have reversing letters, e. g.

fish: 1659
flag: 4567

So the 5 and the 6 are going to have to work equally well in both directions. I suspect one of these is a vowel. The target word has 2 vowels.

Rod would be an alternate word for switch/whip.

A switch could also be "hair" - extra hair used for some hairstyles.

If we can use key for type of switch, we get skyjacked.

Jack - flag

scad - fish

Key - switch
