How to remove red from brown hair

My hair was stripped at a salon and then they accidentally dyed it way to dark. It is currently a very dark brown and I am naturally a light brunette. The darker color fades to an intense reddish brown color.
I hope to remove the red from my hair and lighten it as well, as it naturally does as the color starts to fade.
I used a shower cap with a 20 developer to bring the color down a couple of levels and it is now a medium brown. What should I do to remove the overpowering red undertones. I have toner and a medium ash dye but I am afraid that if I use either of these products my hair will turn too dark because the follicles are so open after using the developer.
Any suggestions?

You either have red or blonde undertones. You will not be able to completely remove the red. Perhaps an ash tone will help - but then you might get greenish tint.

Back to the professionals - a color specialist - for this job.

@pmoscovitz,
I guess it would be better to leave it like that for the time being till the color fades on its own.
