Years ago (when I was young and retentive) browsing in one of the early volumes of Will Durant's History of Civilization, I remember reading that Buddha had decreed that an individual could carry only 84 burdens--and that if that individual took on new burdens, old ones would have to be dropped.
I've tried to find the reference in Durant's books--and failed. I've Googled for "Buddha 84 Burdens" and come up blank.
Can anyone help?
Noddy, I found references to 88 deluded viewpoints, 81 cognitive delusions, 100 dharmas, and 84,000 seems to be a very popular number: there are references to 84,000 afflictions, dharma doors, teachings, kings/monks/followers/Bodhisattvas, features of Buddha, etc. but no mention of an 84-burden limit.
