Hell?

Would a person actually know that they were in Hell? Not a trick question, just a logical question.

I fail to see how logic applies to a discussion of a "place" which is described by religious doctrine, and for the existence of which there is no certainty.

@Setanta,
Heres the coordinates for Hell. Put this into your GPS and plot the route,

We should try to stay on topic. Yes, i believe people would know they were in Hell--they'd see the sign as they drove into town. Passengers might not notice, but that's their look-out.

@Setanta,
Something from Alighieri would seem appropriate under the town name.

You mean as in "Abandon hope, etc." . . . yeah, that would be classy.

@Setanta,
Ok, since we are making assumptions now, let's assume Hell does exist. Would a person actually KNOW that they were in Hell? In other words would God's concept of Hell be different than Man's concept of Hell? It's a more logical question than asking if reality is real, which is a ridiculous question to me, yet one that people argue about all the time.

@mikeymojo,
So you are assuming that Hell exists, that there is a God, that this petty, childish and vicious god will punish people for some minor infractions of doctrinal purity by condemning them to Hell for eternity--those a just a few of the assumptions implicit in your position. Explain to me again where logic enters into this question.

Yes, in this topic Hell and God are assumed to exist. You also described Man's concept of Hell, which is my point. Is it not more punishment not KNOWING one is in Hell thus bringing hope, which will never be fulfilled, no matter how much one tries? To me, IF Hell is real, it's nothing like Man's concept of Hell as told in religious doctrine. Would you agree to that?

@mikeymojo,
No, i wouldn't. I have no reason to agree that such a place as Hell exists, in the first place. All we know of god, if there is a god, is what is embodied in the religious doctrines of organized religions. As far as i know, only western religious traditions have a concept of Hell. There very idea that a god would punish someone for eternity--whether or not they "know" they're in Hell--especially for something as paltry as doctrinal error, is offensive and does not comport with the notion of an omniscient, omnipotent god; the more so if that god is said to be a loving god.

@mikeymojo,
You have to get there by the River Styx. It's in New Jersey. Frank runs the ferry on Thursdays. Cheap fare.

@Setanta,
Infinite punishment not consistent with finite error. . . . .How come you understand this so well and my fellow thumpers do not?
