@Roberta,
So I'd say it's true then, than Jews invented the facepalm.

They facepalmed before facepalming was cool.

Hey, you guys. Get a grip. It's a knish. They're not extinct--just temporarily unavailable.

Such a megillah over a side dish.

Knishes are not blessed. And a biscuit is no substitute.

vonny, A knish (pronouned k-nish) is mashed potatoes, sauteed onions, and other stuff enclosed in some dough and fried. Very tasty and filling. They're often a substitute for french fries at a deli.

I've got a lot of knish recipes from when I was all interested a few years ago, and looked some more up yesterday. My favorite from searching so far -

http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2012/03/potato-knish-two-ways/

I fell in love with the knishes in my former marina del rey grocery store's deli section (Gelson's, if any reader is local to MdR) - some combo of potato and spinach and deliciousness. Can't just eat one... They didn't always have them, sigh.

Besides the smitten kitchen recipes, I've got four more on my desk top. There seem to be a lot of opinions out there for how to make them just right. Anyway, knish making seems to be a perfect way for me to avoid household paperwork and similar stuff.

@Roberta,
They sound lovely! Had a look at Osso's link to recipes - I like the variation in fillings. Laughing
