Reply Fri 20 Dec, 2002 01:40 pm
OK wordsmyths, here's the sixth instalment:

I'm looking for a 9-letter English word (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) which matches the following

Clues:
The letters 5, 7 & 6 (in that order) spell a type of FISH.
The letters 8, 2, 9 & 7 (in that order) spell a type of CHEESE.
The letters 4, 1, 2 & 3 (in that order) spell a group of MAMMALS.

Notes:
All nine letters are different.
Three of the nine letters are vowels.
The correct word (and ALL sub-clue words) are found in Webster's Dictionary - 10th Edition.
Vowels here, are defined as: A, E, I, O and U.

Happy sleuthing

If you get tired of this one, or complete it by tonight, then go to Challenge #7, which should see you through the weekend.

Bib:
It's too soon to move on. We just got started on this one. Macsm is not a quitter. She's just stuck. :wink: I'm not a quitter either. I just don't guess the right answers. Laughing

Group of Mammals:
herd, pack, trip. band, down, husk, mute, raft, army, leap, span, raft, yoke, dray, rout, (not sure about host and sord)

Cheese: tome, trip

Jes, LittleK, Macsm: Come on, gals. You can do it.

3 letters are vowels, so I bet 2 of them are #2 and #7. Since all 9 letters are different, eel, cete and gang are out.

If the fish is a gar and the cheese is feta, then the word is:

-e--graft and the animal group is --e-. Since the 9-letter word seems to be put together logically, I think all we need is to figure out the animal group.

K: that's a good point.

I think I'll add a bit of a hint here:

The group of MAMMALS are four-legged.

Got it! The word is xenograft.

xenograft

n : tissue from an animal of one species used as a temporary graft (as in cases of severe burns) on an individual of another species

The group of animals is oxen.
The cheese is feta.
The fish is a gar.

Thank goodness, you got it, jespah! I was seriously stuck. Feta and gar seemed like a likely combination, but the group of mammals wasn't coming to me...and I was so sure we were looking for something like herd, bevy, gaggle, etc. that I didn't even think of just a plural!

Congratulations Jespah - again!

The correct answer is:

XENOGRAFT

MAMMALS = OXEN
FISH = GAR
CHEESE = FETA

The nine different letters were A, E, F, G, N, O, R, T and X
The three vowels were A, E and O.
