I can't speak for IT, but I feel I can speak for Real Engineering--get into a general engineering program first (CE, ME, EE, ChE, AgE) and then spread your speciality in third and fourth year (e.g, Structure, Hydrology, Power, Transportation, Communications, Process). If you choose to go to graduate school is mushrooms even more.
A good engineer spends their career solving the word problems of life. Do that well and you will always be working.
