The top five law firms, in terms of total layoffs in 2009, were: DLA Piper, Allen & Overy, Latham & Watkins, White & Case, and Clifford Chance, according to the blog. The top five, in terms of lawyer layoffs alone, were Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, White & Case, Linklaters, and Latham & Watkins.
Now, these people work extremely long hours and are paid scads of money. Most of them will be fine, and could probably use the time off anyway. But still! Layoffs stink. Plus now they're competing with everyone else for the three Wal-Mart jobs that are out there.
I don't normally feel sorry for lawyer types, but yeah that does stink.
It's got to be quite a humbling experience as well. Many of those people are not going to be able to find jobs as lawyers and will probably take massive pay cuts. Hopefully it doesn't drive many of them to suicide.
