Well, 'cept for nimh, of course; when he's not busy beatin' up on me, he's draggin' threads all over the place
Just teasin' ya, nimh
Yeppers.
Though, I dunno, nimh might be about to provoke me........lol.
Edited last paragraph of above post ... I do get dlowan's point about the "clique" risk of "primary school popularity contexts" ... but i think its perfectly moving to see someone explain why exactly they think someone else is such a brilliant or loveable poster.
Just read nimh's long post about PC, yeah, I see what you mean. (And I didn't start this with "Yeah", full stop, which I almost did!!. :-D)
I remember finding the cliquey things on Abuzz annoying, though, as completely separate from whether I was mentioned -- not at all a PC thing or even a manners thing, just a what-annoys-me-about-the-Internet thing. How to say. I adore these communities, I find them interesting, engaging, wonderful in many ways, but fundamentally separate from real life. (I've recently had a couple of experiences that have clarified that for me.) So I find a certain aspect of asking for and receiving strokes... irritating. Cliquey.
THAT IS NOT WHAT I SEE HERE -- especially in that it was started by someone new, which is cool. It is what I saw a lot of on Abuzz, and my lingering dislike for that carries over. Very similar to what dlowan is referring to, I think.
I like how Setanta handled this, offering praise (I agree, I like seeing praise) but in an overtly un-cliquey way.

Yes - I love that too.
And I have no qualm with that.
From the POV of a new-comer - I think this thread is great. (the whole site is great!)
It allows us newer folk to see who's posts people are into and why they are into them. Everything posted on here has been positive and I can't imagine why anyone would be offended if they weren't named. (150 people named compared to 11,000 unnamed)
For the most part it seems that A2Kers are pretty bright and fairly confident. I think that it's better to compliment the good things, at the risk of offending the uncomplimented, than to not compliment at all.
If people are concerned about how much they are "liked" they can always read the posts of those who are well-liked to figure out why people like them.
I think the fact that there are so many members on here is a good indication that generally most are well-liked even if they aren't mentioned.
Special appreciation goes out to CDK, Jespah, and all the moderators for making such a great community. But appreciation goes out to all contributing members. I always look forward to seeing what's going on here.
Aw, you guys got ahead of me while I was typing. Yeah, the primary school thing.
Definitely want to welcome Jer, if I haven't yet. You're great!

Does get harder 'n' harder ta keep track of, don't it?
I like every person here except two. This is a great forum.
I don't like anybody here except two, this is a great forum.
Wondered when you two would show up
One of the attractions of AWK to me is that I grow to like people I disagree with. Points of view seem to become part of a mesh, a lacework (that's how I used to describe cities and their piazzas, a lacework). There aren't only the views, but the styles, the personalities that come through, character willing out.
I also am rather keen on the new a2ker, panzade. Big welcome.
I remember (poorly) an anecdote about seating arangements in which someone asked about whether people would be offended or feel slighted by them.
Anywho the main character of this anecdote (my memory is misfiring) said:
"Those who care don't matter, and those who matter don't care."
I take these threads in much the same spirit. Sometimes I worry about an omission offending someone till I realize that if they are offended by the ommission I like 'em a bit less anyway.

. . . in a word, reticulation . . .
I remember an anecdote that CdK wrote at one time that mentioned every single member of A2K.
Redoing that would be quite an accomplishment at this point.
Yeah, and cjhsa, you were funny on a thread I saw a few minutes ago...
reticulation, that's it. I remember learning about the brain as having nerve net reticula. (um, reticuli?)
Thanks Osso, I am bathed in your gentle light. I also love the contradictions of a veal dish and a slight Scottish burr. I am very pleased with this thread and all the contributions. When I think back on my first postings, my trepidation stemmed from a fear that A2K was a group of cliques revolving around a few moderators. It is quite evident that this is not so. I think us newbies have learned a lot and we will be much more at ease when posting in.
