Reply Thu 19 Dec, 2002 01:13 pm
OK wordsmyths, here's the fifth instalment:

I'm looking for a 9-letter English word (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) which matches the following

Clues:
The letters 6, 7, & 3 (in that order) spell an animal PARENT.
The letters 7, 9, 4 & 5 (in that order) spell a Hebrew LETTER.
The letters 1, 7, 4, 8 & 2 (in that order) spell a former COUNTRY.

Notes:
All nine letters are different.
Three of the nine letters are vowels.
The correct word (and ALL sub-clue words) are found in Webster's Dictionary - 10th Edition.
Vowels here, are defined as: A, E, I, O and U.

Happy sleuthing

Another former country is Burma.

Hebrew letters: alef, beth, zayn, chet, teth, yodh, khaf, ayin, resh, shin, tsaf. I may have the spellings wrong. These are approximations anyway.

Animal parent: sow, ewe, dam.

Hmm the animal parent can't be ewe because none of the letters repeat.

The word is zemindary
* The system of tax collection by zamindars.
* The area administered by a zamindar.

The animal parent is a dam.
The Hebrew letter is ayin.
The former country is Zaire.

Littlek and Raggedy: remember what the NOTES say about where to find these words:

"The correct word (and ALL sub-clue words) are found in Webster's Dictionary - 10th Edition."

To help you find them, go to Merriam Webster Dictionary Online and that will keep you right.

The answer was indeed:

ZEMINDARY

Clues:
PARENT = DAM
LETTER = AYIN
COUNTRY = ZAIRE

Notes:
The NINE different letters were A, D, E, I, M, N, R, Y, and Z
The THREE vowels were A, E, and I
The correct word (and the THREE clue words) were all found in Webster's Dictionary - 10th Edition.

I trust that you all learned something new today!
