THE BEST OF THE FOREIGN MEDIA

Reply Thu 19 Dec, 2002 01:08 pm
In my opinion, very few Americans are aware of the contributions of the foreign media. We are content to refer to our local paper, TV, the internet, magazines or one of our high profile newspapers such as the NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, etc.

eve offered this posting in another thread. I believe it speaks for itself:
Quote:
I know we have a different slant on things down under but since I have been on the Net I have browsed all the available news sources I can find and have settled on the Sydney Morning Herald. It seems to give more detail on the major issues and more of the interesting "snippets" that I often don't see anywhere else.

Tell us about your experience with the foreign media. Any recommendations?

google.news just deliveres news from English written or translated newspapers - especially, when translated, this may give a different view.
Thus, quite some countries aren't represented by google.news at all.

Guardian Unlimited (UK) is always interesting for news & opinion. Often quite a different perspective to US-based media.

I didn't realize that Walt. Do you recommend any of the media outside of the U.S.?

If you are looking to understand how people from different parts of the world react to the news, go to:

Link to "All You Can Read"

Personally, I attempt to avoid that site. My husband had to pull me out of my computer chair when I got involved in this site, and would not get up after many hours! Very Happy

The only non-Internet newspaper I read is Japan's English-language Daily Yomiuri. Not sure why I stick to that one (I think the Japan Times has greater readership and uses less from other news sources) but I guess it's just a matter of habit for me. If only I could read more than just basic Japanese there'd be soooooo much to choose from...people here love their newspapers & magazines!

I read (this is different from like) Ha'aretz (sp?), the Jerusalem Post, Guardian, O Globo, Veja, and then a few hundred other newspapers that can be found online.

I generally prefer English puiblications but will read Spanish or Portuguese articles if I have to.

Monger, can I assume you are in Japan?

Craven, I don't believe you will answer this, but are you brighter than the average bear...as in higher IQ and such?

Well, actually from outsite the US I recommend 'The Guardian' and 'The Independent'.
If there is a special problem/question or so related to one country, I try to read one of the national papers there. (Which sometimes is really difficult, since besides German, I only have a some knowledge of English and French, don't know more than basic Italian and Spanish.)

Bears are pretty dumb so I hope so. As to IQ I did well in tests as a child but have only taken online tests since then and they tend to want to make you feel good about yourself so I don't trust their results.

But I don't place any value in IQ tests.

We've subscribed to World Press Review which is a monthly collection of articles & opinions from lots of different news organizations around the world. Though it means we're looking at nearly two month old news, it provides a glimpse beyond our own daily papers.

When we were traveling we liked to get the London Times. The Guardian usually made me angry! The newspaper from Madrid, is it El Pais?, had a nice English language section.

That fairly okay, Piffka, if you want to read conservative papers!
