Rainsoft Gold Series - won't Regenerate Automatically

I recently bought a home and it has the Rainsoft gold series from about the year 2000. It also has the Rainsoft silver series combined with it. Anyway, I can get the system to manually regenerate but I cannot get it to automatically regenerate. I set the hour but nothing happens at that hour. I have set it during the day so I can watch for it and hear it.

Does the system only regenerate if it needs to at the regeneration time and then skips 24 hours if it doesn't need to? I have done a manual regeneration so will it wait 24 hours before doing the automatic regeneration? Or is there something wrong with my system that I can check on my own just to be sure? Thanks.
