Context:
Its wealth lay in the earth, in precious gems humed from rock.
@oristarA,
Are you sure you got the word "humed" right? It rings no bells.
Cheerfully is an odd word choice, in any case. Maybe in the case of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but I don't know if that much of our culture has invaded yours.
@roger,
It's a quote from The Hobbit, so we need a LOTR junkie to arrive with a decoder ring.
@ehBeth,
In that case, I would like to take this opportunity to retract my opinion on the word cheerfully.
@oristarA,
At a guess, it's a misspelling of exhumed.
At a second guess, he's making a pun on the word exhumed.
It's not a quote from the book The Hobbit, it's a quote from the English subtitles to the motion picture The Hobbit--which is not the same thing at all. God only knows who are responsible for such subtitles.
HEWN, past participle of hew, meaning to chop or cut (something, esp. wood) with an ax, pick, or other tool.
Come on, folks, wake up.
