G-Mail question

I use the gmail option on Google for one of my e-mail addresses. Here's my problem: after I've read a particular post, it disappears somewhere into the ether when I return to my mailbox. I don't know how to retrieve it. I've clicked on everything I can think of, but can't find that piece of mail again. I've lost some important stuff because of this. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I've got Google Chrome.

@Lustig Andrei,
Gmail does an extremely annoying thing. It will group your messages, usually by date or subject line. One thing that can help is to tag your messages. Gmail does not have folders, but you can click the label icon at the top and just start typing in a new label name. You can find labeled mail sorted on the left, by label. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a start.
