I bought this steering wheel cover. . . .

I got it at Family Dollar, and at $2.00 it fits both the wheel and my hands much better than an earlier one that cost boo coo more bucks. Problem: it's made of something called velour, and it's slicker'n snake snot, or nearly so. What to do?

I'm thinking of stopping at the office supply store and getting something like Tacky Finger, or maybe bees' wax would make it a little more tacky. Both might turn out to be kind of messy, expecially if summer ever returns.

Any ideas.

Super Glue ought to do the trick.

@edgarblythe,
It doesn't slip on the steering wheel, though. My hands tend to slip a little on the cover. I should have stated the problem a little more clearly. Thanks.

@roger,
back to the $ store for gardening gloves - the little nubs hang onto everything - and they are great for dog/cat massaging AND you look good in floral

@roger,
remove the cover, from the inside pierce the cover with these

i'd place the tacks about every inch or so, replace the cover on the wheel, it might take some getting used to, but your hands won't slip on the cover anymore

@djjd62,
Not to worry. Several answers would seem to require a period of acclimatazation.

Pending further "contributions", I'm leaning towards the Tacky Finger, which is a wax like substance used on the fingers to aid in turning pages and handling paper generally.

I was just kind of, you know, hoping. . . .

@roger,
you were hoping Setanta would come down to be your chauffeur?

I believe I can arrange that.

@ehBeth,
I don't really need a history of steering wheel covers in medieval France, thank you very much, anyway.

@roger,
So I'm assuming sweat is not the problem, because Tacky Finger is supposed to moisturize your finger as well as make it somewhat gooey sticky.
Any reason not to discard the current velour steering wheel cover, and say get a wheel cover material with tackier material such as leather?
Have you decided to stick with the velour material to protect your hands from heat or cold?
How about a pair of leather driving gloves with thinsulate?
Anyway, my two cents on the matter is to buy the tacky overgrip tape from a sports equipment store. They are pretty cheap, and are used to repair golf clubs and/or tennis racket handles, but I think it may work to your advantage in your case. Just cut it up into sufficient length and spiral tightly around the velour steering wheel cover, the taped bands spaced out around the steering wheel cover as needed. I've never tried it myself, so I'm not sure if the adhesiveness on the tape will stick properly on the velour surface. You can at least give it a try.

Non-slip tape.

I have an idea that you also bought the matching bathrobe but the thought of you accidentally slipping into something uncomfortable whilst driving tempers my enthusiasm.

@Bennet,
Thanks, Bennet.

No, sweat hasn't been a problem; it's more a matter of having worn through the original material. Leather could be good, but the last wheel cover I had was too bulky when installed, and was a kind of sloppy and loose fit. I couldn't stand to feel it move around under my hand, and honestly, while I could afford such if it worked, it might be another expensive experiment.

Tennis racket grips have big potential. The start of the wrap is not problem, but they are usually terminated with what amounts to a big, fat rubber band. I don't know if I'm crafty enough to make a solid termination or not. I may go that route and find out. That reminds me of baseball bat grips, and the bar tape they use on the handlebars of road bikes. This ups the cost considerably, but well worth it if it works.

Thanks, you've kind of stimulated the thought processes.

@roger,
Velour?
They make velour steering wheel covers?
Seriously?

Maybe you should replace the dome light with a disco ball.

@roger,
I can see most people here are taking your troubling problem rather lightly. I am far too serious to do that. The best thing to do is simply start over. chalk the $2.00 up to experience, or itemize your car costs and write it off as a business expense. Ever since I had a sports car with a padded large-diameter rim a couple decades ago, I've hated those thin ppastic-y rims most cars seem to come with, and have used a steering wheel cover. Someplace like Target usually has ones for somewhere between 6 and ten bucks that work well. I've hade one for years now that I really like, dark gray, something that feels like leather but probably isn't, with just the right amount of tack to turn it and not slip. They fit VERY closely on the car's steering wheel--you have to grunt and groan and tug to get the cover to fit over it, so make sure you have the seams on the cover where you want them before you try to put it on. they also make ones that look like shiny patent leather. Avoid those. Get one that is more of a matte finish than a shiny finish, which is more likely to be slippery. I've seen some in the last year or so that look and feel like microsuede or microfiber. Could that be what you describe as velour? Don't know how they work, but they feel pretty good in the store.

@roger,
What about adding some double-sided tape around the steering wheel every three inches or so?

@MontereyJack,
Thanks, Jack. Target is where I got the last one, and it just didn't fit the wheel closely. I guess they couldn't make one with a snug fit and still fit over the wheel. I could afford another, but might end up with the same problem. I insist that the wheel cover feel secure. Also, it was just too darn bulky for my hands.

By the way, the Tack Finger was not the way to go. Even in cold weather, it feels just a mite oily. Good for handling paper, but not so good on steering wheels. I should have known better.
