Civil union VS marriage

I am neither for or against gay marriage and I couldn't care less if same sex couples were to marry. Good for them.
But I would like help understanding.
Civil unions in Australia have all the same legal rights as a marriage - true or false? So why do people want same sex marriage to be legal? Marriage is about doing what is right in the eyes of GOD and as far as I know homosexual behavior is sinful.
Please help explain without being harsh as I don't mean for this to come across as rude if it does.

What about married heterosexual couples who are atheists? Are atheists allowed to marry each other?

If a heterosexual couple doesn't believe in "sin," does that make them homosexual?

If a civil union is the same as marriage, let's eliminate marriage and have it all be labeled as civil unions. What would be wrong with that?
