I was just wondering whether anyone could help me out I am not doing a project or an essay or anything I am just interested? I have heard that after bushfires many plants from Australia germiante I have also heard that some Natve Australian plants can only germinate after fires. I have been researching this topic in my spare time and I found out that scientists say that they use to think it was the heat but they have done some tests and they think it might be the smoke! I have found out that the green and red kangaroo paw ( Which has been known to be almost impossible to grow from a seed) actually grows very rapidly after being in contact with smoke! I am really interested in thsi topic and I was wondering whether you guys could help me if you know any other plants preferably Australian Natives that germinate only after bushfires and with being in contact with cold smoke! I hope you guys have an opinion and might be able to help me buils up my knowledge! From Cheeki-Jess xoxo Very Happy

Don't know much about OZ plants but here in the USA we have some that do well or better after fires. I'll find a link or two.

Try here, Cheeki-Jess, as a start.

It is the result of a search I did on "Ask Jeeves".

We did a seed experiment for first year biology. I haven't got time to dig it out and get the exact results, but heat plays an important part. We exposed half of the seeds to heat (by way of immersion in boiling water for 30 minutes) and the other half got no exposure. From memory, none of the ones not heat treated germinated, while most of the ones that were heat treated did germinate.
