...debating this guy I know who thinks religions are fake.
define "fake?" I can't help you argue unless you give me a more in-depth description of what you want to prove.
The following is for the purpose of mental excersise only. It is meant to give insight into debate but shjould not be aped when it comes to reasoning.
To argue in favor of religions you should:
1) Avoid burden of proof at all costs.
2) Ignore the responsibility of burden of proof at all costs.
Both can be done by focusing on any assertion or claim made by your opponent. If they go so far as to assert that a religion/diety is false you need to act like the assertion on their part is an assumption of burden of proof. It's not but if they are rash they can make it look like they have the responsibility of burden of proof.
3) Focus on the impossibility of disproof. The very nature of religions is such that it's not possible to disprove them. This is a damning argument against religions but most laymen will not pick up on that and will not understand why.
So if they make a sweeping statement or really say anything forceful against religion demand proof. It should be couching in a way that seems to be requesting that they defend the assertion they made. Thusly suggesting that the burden of proof is on them (remember that it's not, so avoid using the term "burden of proof" and make rhetorical use of the ploy to get them to "prove" their assertion.
If they are given to rhetorical hyperbole and are not skilled in debate they'l paint themselves into a corner and at least allow for you to achieve a stalemate.
4) Leverage some of the positivism of religion. This can downplay the issue of the veracity of the diety and maximize the effect of the stereotypical positives about religion.
When all else fails use the emperor's new clothes that is "faith".
Craven, yer a bad, bad man . . .

okbye
Try to debate same with Jehovah's Witnesses... they are trained. Take notes.
Or Hari Krishna's
Or Southern Baptists
Or ...
Craven: Very sound advice indeed, but I think you've missed one important debating tactic. In the event someone asserts that all religions are "fake," the first response should be: "with that kind of logic, it's no wonder that you don't get laid more often."
It's an irrefutable argument. In the words of Kenny Banya: "That's gold, Jerry! Gold!"
