£25,000 prize for 'Loony Marathon'

Bookmakers are offering £25,000 to anyone who can outrun 30 horses and riders over a 22-mile course to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Screaming Lord Sutch.

William Hill says they hope up to 300 runners will take up the "Loony Marathon" challenge in Britain's smallest town, Llanwrtyd Wells in Mid Wales on Saturday, June 12.

A permanent memorial to the leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party will be unveiled in the town before the race, which is being held for the 25th time.

Lord Sutch, who attended the Man versus Horse Marathon race for eleven years as Official Starter and was there three days before his death in June 1999.

A spokesman for William Hill, which used to sponsor many of Sutch's political campaigns, said: "It seems entirely appropriate to us that the country's craziest race in which horses take on humans should incorporate a tribute to the country's craziest, or Looniest, ever political leader."
