Baked bean capital dubbed Windy City
Story filed: 15:12 Tuesday 24th February 2004
West Bromwich has been dubbed The Windy City after a survey found its inhabitants to be the UK's biggest fans of baked beans.
Tesco said more cans of Britain's favourite tinned food were bought per household in the Black Country town than anywhere else, closely followed by Coventry, Telford, Grimsby and Leicester.
Tesco grocery category spokeswoman Florinda Deiana said: "People from West Bromwich must be among the healthiest in the country - baked beans are extremely nutritious.
"So loved are beans in West Bromwich that local shoppers buy an average 11 tins of them each week."
In a related story, all of the towns downwind of West Bromwich were declared contaminated. Funding was approved for a massive pollution clean-up.
