safari bookmarks on an iMac

This is a dumb question, but I'm flummoxed -
After a big OS system change, I'm trying to reconstitute my bookmarks, which isn't all so hard since I remember a lot of them, and have sent myself emails with lists.

But, next to bookmarks I now see the number 42 in parenthesis in the toolbar.
How do I get rid of that?
I remember seeing similar in the past, but not how I got rid of it.
