Community Environment

Background Info.- We are a community of over 200 households..pop. of 800 + persons. Due to the country's only industry (PHOSPHATE) thus it being the lifeline of the nation, certain rights of the people of the community have been subjected to environmental issues detrimental to quality of life. We have been struggling to get our Gov't to acknowledge and work with us in partnership so we can move towards making a policy (Environmental legislation/act/ law non existent) that is not only geared towards climate change but one that also addresses our community issues. Only this week comm.reps. were told there is already an Environmental Bill waiting to be passed . They asked if they could see the draft but this was said to be confidential. However they were told that it included none that would help our community. Our community is the industrial centre of Nauru so our problems are many. 1. dust emission 2. contaminants in our fresh water and brackish water supply. 3. health issues ..trachoma, respiratory ailments, cancers etc. Please help with any ideas we can utilise.

Hello friends,

Environmentalism can extend beyond the personal mantra of the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. By bonding together with like-minded individuals in your community, your potential impact on the Earth and your neighborhood can be greatly increased.

One way to bring a neighborhood together is to plan a community garden. You will have to find a large, vacant plot of land and people willing to plant and care for their portion of the garden. Your group may also have to teach people garden basics. Community gardens are a wonderful way to reclaim unused land, and they benefit both the environment and the diets of those eating the healthy fruits and vegetables grown.

Thanks and Regards
Alex Johns
