I learned his name by accident. I somehow identified with the character in the song. I recall it as the sound was similar to and around the time of Midnight Cowboy theme song by Nilsson 'Everybody's Talkin'.

Fred Rose wrote many great songs, including Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. Here is Fred's Take These Chains, as sung by Ray Charles.

Quite likely that Christie Minstrels number had been used at square dances way back ,when folks did such things - like the do-si-do , alliman left, the promenade, etc.

Before the Minstrels recorded it, that is.
