Another subject I would like to clarrify is, whether the American Lion, P.l.atrox/P.atrox, crossed into South America ?

Many websites state that the American Lion crossed the Isthmus of Panama and spread into northwestern part of South America, with Peru being the most often mentioned locality where fossils were found.

From what I've read, feline fossils found in Talara tar seeps in Peru originally classified as P.l.atrox actually belong to prehistoric jaguars.

Furthermore, range-distribution map shown by Barnett,et al. 2009, also excludes atrox from the South American continent.
