I hitchhiked to LA in 1968 and when I arrived I found myself on Hollywood Blvd and was blown away that I had made it. I was 18 years old and I was free. A rather big bus filled with singing people passed by and turned a corner and all the Street People went into stores or up side streets and said "The Jesus Freaks are Here". I stood right where I was and around a corner came a group of people my age & older and they were singing and playing guitars and stopped right in front of me and some others and continued to sing. I was mesmerized and could not get over how Happy they all were. When they stopped, the most beautiful woman I had ever seen(who was leading the singing) looked me in the eye and said "I want you to know that Jesus Loves You". I couldn't believe my ears.
Jesus loved me!
Wow!
Well she invited me to come back to where they lived in downtown LA and we sang all the way there.
They lived in a big building that was owned by a TV Pastor who had his Studio in the Bldg and a Show called "Church in the Home".
We danced and sang and ate and hugged most of the night and then I was invited to stay & join the Family.
Faith & Her husband Joshua prayed with me to receive Jesus in my heart and I stayed.
For a few days I went to a class every day and helped prepare food.
Then I started going out on the Bus to the Beach or The Park or Hollywood Blvd and spoke to people about Jesus.
I was in front of Whiskey-A-Go-Go" on Sunset Blvd one night and I met a British man and told him all about Jesus, His name was Jeremy Spencer and he was a drummer in a group called Fleetwood Mac. He came back to our place in LA and Joshua & Faith spent a lot of time with them. His wife Fiona & his little boy came from their hotel and after a few days the decided to remain with Us. There was quite a stir from the Fleetwood people and they tried to get Jeremy back desperately. He wanted to serve God.
It was Jeremy that started the Family in England.
I will never forget that time in my life.
I was given a Biblical name like everyone else and it went from Frank To Lotan! I was so proud....
I had a new name.
I fit in ...
I had a Family who loved me.
I even got to sing in the Choir on the Church in the Home TV Show.
I only met Moses once!
He lived in seclusion and sent Moe Letters which we treated like Epistles.
I had to give all my clothes and were given my choice from a huhe attic full of clothes.
Every so often some of us dressed in Sackcloth Robes and stood silently with Scrolls of Bible Scripture held in our hands to protest Pornographic shops & strip clubs and other places.
It caused quite a stir and was very powerful to witness.
Faith's husband was a former Cop and her brothers ran the whole show and they had so much love for all of us!
I ended up leaving with a friend because we heard about a Minister in San Francisco who was feeding the Hungry & Housing the Homeless and Treating Drug Addicts named Jim Jones and we wanted to do something in the community on a larger scale.
I never saw anything overtly sexual in nature while I was there but was told that one day we would all be married to each other and fill the earth with joyful children.
